In the Rocky Mountains, elevation means the difference between getting rained on all night, or being stuck in a blizzard with a foot of new snow. This image of Longs Peak from Lumpy Ridge illustrates that point quite well. It rained all night over the Estes Valley. At just about the same level as timberline, the rain had changed over to heavy snow as can be seen freshly covering Longs Peak and Mount Meeker as the new day illuminates Rocky Mountain National Park's highest peak.
