Snow Eater

A Chinook wind is a warm downsloping wind. Its a Native American term that means 'snow eater'. These blades on one of the rotary snow plows that help to remove the feet of snow that has accumulated on Trail Ridge Road perform the same function. The paint is warn from the rotary blades causing a fine polished appearened to these impressive machines. Each season, starting in April, NPS crews start plowing Trail Ridge Road, one group from the Estes Park side, and another from the Grand Lake side. With the help of multiple rotary snow plows, they will end up meeting somewhere near the Alpine Visitor Center in May. Photo © copyright by Thomas Mangan.
