Wildfires were burning across the western United States this day. Smoke from Idaho and Montana had drifted south and covered Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park with a haze. Knowing that the smoke would hinder most photography, I headed to the top of Flattop Mountain for sunrise. I knew the smoke would help with the layering of the mountains on the east side of Rocky and the Estes Valley. Here the sun rises directly east of Bierstadt Lake as can be seen on the flat plateau it sits on east of Flattop Mountain. The blue smoke and warm sunrise made for great contrast and color on what would otherwise be a difficult morning to capture anything worthwhile. Photo © copyright by Thomas Mangan.
