This was an interesting encounter for me. I was out hiking on the Ute Trail between the Alpine Visitor Center and Milner Pass one morning. As I neared Forest Pass, I did a double take at what appeared to be an Elk Calf resting a few yards off the trailhead. I took a few images and gave the newborn calf a wide berth all the while scanning every nook and cranny for the mother. Returning about an house later, the calf had moved on . Luckily I never saw the mother and I was glad to see this calf had moved off as a trail crew was working only a few hundred yards from this location. Never disturb a newborn Elk Calf and under no circumstances approach them. You do not want to have a run in with mom nor do you want to do anything that would lead to the calf being abandoned.
