On snowy overcast days you can often find me wandering around the Ponderosa Pine forests around Rocky Mountain National Park. There is just something special about the orange tinted bark of the Ponderosa pine and that way its boughs hold on to the fluffy Colorado powder like snow. Ponderosa's make for great photographic subjects and are one of my favorite trees to photograph. I photographed this scene on Easter morning. I was hiking amongst the Ponderosa trees of Moraine Park. The previous nights storm that brought the snow was moving out and the sun was peaking through the clouds on occasion. This time of year, the radiant heat from the sun was warm enough to melt all the snow from the rocky surfaces but not from the tree's themselves. The small boulders and rocks present in Moraine Park started to reveal themselves from below the fresh snow creating interesting compositions amongst the snow that remained on the ground and on the pine boughs and trees.
