I was out early one fall morning hiking through Moraine Park looking to capture some images of the elk rut. While on the trail that circles Moraine Park, I caught a large black object moving from the meadow into the trees. I could see it was a large black bear but figured once he saw me he would just head off into the woods and thats the last I would see of him. Contrary to what I thought, this large boar moved into the tree covered and proceeded to sit down in the brush and look at me. This was all happening just as the sun was rising. Not wanting to get any closers, I setup my camera a large telephoto lenses and proceeded to photograph this beautiful bear. While bears are common in Rocky Mountain National Park, it's rare that you will ever even see them. You probably have a better chance finding them in Estes Park or Grand Lake sauntering through town in the middle of the night than seeing them in Rocky. Regardless, they are my favorite wildlife subjects to photograph so I always consider it a blessing when I get to spend a few moments with them. Photo © copyright by Thomas Mangan.
